Directly above the column is the entablature. It is a set of intersecting beams mid-lapped to fit over each other. The top edge of the entablature is notched to receive the eight rafters. The rafters are twelve feet long and just a few inches longer than the entablature. The rafters are notched on their bottoms to fit together with the entablature's notches.
Above the rafters are two inch by three inches boards called purlins. They and the rafters fit together with the same style of intersecting notches.
